SCCAP- Rent and Utility Relief

SCCAP’s Emergency Rental and Utility Relief program can help individuals who reside in Adams or Franklin counties, have income under 80% of the Median Income, have been directly or indirectly impacted by COVID and need help with rent or utilities. This program can assist eligible applicants with arrearages back 12 months (but not earlier than March 13, 2020).

Who can apply? Renters who are behind on their rent. Renters who are behind on their utilities (gas, electric, water, sewer, trash, or fuel oil or propane)

Required Documentation:

  • Application and required documentation (last 30 days of income for everyone over 18, photo ID of applicant, and past due notice for rent and/or utilities)

  • Landlord packet (landlord info form, W9 and letter stating how much is currently owed)

  • Copy of your Lease

PULP- Know Your Rights: Regulated Utilities

The PA Utility Law Project works to guarantee that low-income Pennsylvanians can connect and maintain their utilities in their home. Each situation is different. For consultation on your case, call PULP’s utility hotline at 844-645-2500. Resources are available in English and Spanish.

Gettysburg C.A.R.E.S.

What: a resource center run by churches where guests can shower, wash clothes, apply for jobs, and improve their lives. There is space for 30 individuals to sleep in a church and a house to pass day time between working or job searching

Schedule: October-April, all week, various hours

Intake process: call the center to see if there is space at 717-334-4195

Requirements: cannot have any open warrants, pass a criminal background check, and follow the shelter rules


SCCAP Homeless Shelter

What: short-term shelter for families and help in finding affordable housing

Schedule: Mon.-Fri. 8am-5pm (for information; more time if you are staying there)

Address: 151 N. Stratton St., Gettysburg (rear)

Process: call 717-337-2413 to see if there is space and for a pre-screening *normally there is someone there who speaks Spanish


New Hope Ministres

How: If you need assistance, please call the Center you live closest to.  You may need to leave a message, but please allow staff time to get back in touch with you.  You must live within our service area in order to receive assistance. If you do not live within our service area, please call 2-1-1 for help or visit www.211.org.

Who: working individuals who simply cannot make ends meet; senior citizens on fixed incomes; people with disabilities or illnesses; victims of job loss or spousal abandonment; people suffering from other crises

What: We assist our guests with basic needs, such as rent/mortgage to prevent homelessness, utilities to keep families safe and warm, and transportation needs

SHARE: Shared Housing and Resource Exchange

What: an affordable housing choice that brings together homeowners who want to share their home with home seekers in exchange for rent, help around the house, or a combination of both. Home seekers will have their own bedroom and agreed upon use of the common areas.

Eligibility: older adults, persons with disabilities, veterans, working professionals, college students, individuals at-risk of homelessness, single parents, or people simply wishing to share their lives and homes with others. Participants must be at least 18 and one of the individuals must be over 60

How it works: homeowner and home seeker meet SHARE Housing Counselor separately to discuss needs and preferences, complete the application, and provide references. More information

LIHEAP

What: help paying for heating bills or with a heating emergency

When: November 2, 2020- April 9,2021

What you need to apply: names, DOB, and SSN of all household members; proof of income for all members; a recent heating bill. More information here.

Apply online, request an application by calling LIHEAP line at 1-866-857-7095, or applications are available in the County Assistance Office

Weatherization

What: help in making your home more energy efficient to lower heating and energy bills

The program is based on income and has a wait list

Call 717-334-7634 ext. 134 to be added to the wait list


Subsidized Housing

What: help with rent and/or subsidized homes/apartments

Apply: fill out this application and send it by mail, fax, or email to Adams County Housing Authority

Hours: Mon.-Thur. 8am-4:30pm; Fri. 8am-2pm

IMPORTANT NOTES: there is an extensive wait list for public housing (years long); this also negatively counts against your case in the Public Charge test and it is important to consult your lawyer; everyone who will be living in the home has to have a Social Security Number
